Collector's Cache

I recently saw Chris Olds rip one of these, so I went out on my lunch break and picked one up.  He grabbed his because there was a 2003 Flair jumbo boxtopper in there as the guaranteed auto or relic.  I found two that had 2003 Flair jumbos, and I figured I would take a chance on one.  I'm glad I did.   There was also a third box there that didn't have a jumbo relic.  I could see the relic inside that one and tell that it was a Portraits relic of some sort because it had a pullout relic.  I could see part of the front and it was a twins player.  Upon further research at home, I determined based on the corner of the picture that it was a Michael Cuddyer.  That raised a dilemma: do I spend $15 knowing that I'm getting a $5 relic or just pass.  I passed.  It still bothers me, but such is life.  I was there to get a Flair jumbo, and that's what I did.

As you can see on the sticker, the cache includes:

1 Storage Case - I already had a couple of these boxes.  I like them. That's already $3-5 value right there.

Over 500 Cards (6 decades) - So, that's '10s, '00s, '90s, '80s, '70s, '60s...not bad.  Most of them will be of the "here, you throw these away" variety, but should be fun nonetheless.

1 Game Used or Autograph card - Ok, most probably suck, but the 2003 Flair jumbo cards look pretty cool.

1 Major League Collector's Patch -  The box shows a Yankee Stadium patch.  Whatever, it's pretty cool and adds a little value.  Maybe I can turn the patch into some custom cards?

3 Factory Sealed Packs - You can see inside the box, so you know what you're getting here. Don't expect greatness.

1 One-touch - who doesn't love one-touch magnetic cases.  Seriously. There's another $1 of value right there.

COLLECTOR COINS!!! - aka 1990 Topps Coins. I'm not sure exactly how many are in there, but there are a ton.  Like maybe 100-150.

So, let's see how I did:

I'm showing the coins first because they practically poured out of this thing.  Somehow, I didn't manage to get a complete set, despite getting at lest 5-6 of Ripken, Griffey, and several others.  I added these to my want list.  I still need: 18,19,20,22,25,26,28,30,35,36,39,45,59,60.

My patch is the same as the one on the sticker.  Pretty cool, though, and a decent size.

I can't imagine anyone is surprised to see '90 Donruss, Opening Day, and First Edition in here.  For a great video on how to open 1990 Donruss, go here.  While the Donruss and FE sucked, the Opening Day was actually a really good pack:

A blue, a Mascot, a Wright, AND and Upton
The 500+ cards in the box were fun to flip through, much like the shoebox cards I'm showing on the blog.  I only scanned a few, and I'm pretty sure it's the first time Prospects Plus and '88 Leaf have been scanned together:

Scherzer, Zimmerman, and Heyward is a decent trio of cards.  I've never had any '88 Leaf.  That logo is huge.  Pretty cool.

As for older cards:

I gotta say it's cool to get these from a repack box.  The most notable cards were these two:

'69 Niekro and '79 Murphy
Lastly, we get to the 2003 Flair Jumbo Boxtopper.  Each one is roughly the size of an A&G Cabinet card (6"x8" ish) and comes with a full checklist:

You can see it's a pretty good checklist.

I was extremely happy with the card I got:

Given the size of the card, you can imagine how nice the patch is in person.  The patch itself is around 1.5" x 2".  Pretty awesome.  I think I definitely got my money's worth.

Damnnnn. I saw three of these at Target the other day and almost picked one up. Might have to go see if they're still there.

Hmm... Cuddy or Chippah? Well, I'm biased. I would have taken the Cuddy. :)

This seems like a cheap and fun buy. Where do they sell these boxes?

I got one too. It also had tons of coins but they were much older. Wanna trade one of them Griffey coins??

Hi Spankee - Thanks for your review. Based on your recommendation I picked one up at Target tonight. They had 6 of them there, but only one with the Jumbo box-topper, so I grabbed that one. Mine was a Jason Giambi large pinstripe (Yankees) relic, #'d/50.
I will check my coins to see if there are any I need. I got that same Jason Heyward card.
